The Oncology Department of Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is a key discipline of oncology by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and a top priority clinical oncology discipline in Shanghai. In the discipline competitiveness ranking of municipal hospitals in 2022 released by Shanghai Health Development Research Center, Renji Oncology ranked second only to Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, and first among comprehensive hospitals. Renji Oncology ranked 9th in the national scientific research competitiveness ranking of oncology.

The oncology department has approved 42 beds (38 in the East and 4 in the South), with 23 doctors and 23 nurses. Doctors are distributed in Renji East Hospital and South Hospital; and in Punan, Baoshan, Ningbo, and Nantong branches. Among doctors, there are 13 party members (59%), 12 with senior professional titles (55%), and 19 with doctoral degrees (86%).

Under the leadership of Director Xiao Xiuying, the current head of the department, the Oncology Department carries out cancer lifecycle management for various solid cancer patients, providing personalized, standardized, and precise comprehensive treatment. And carry out minimally invasive biopsy, hyperthermia, irreversible electroporation ablation therapy (nanoknife), implantable intravenous infusion port (PORT) implantation and maintenance. And the department has become a national clinical trial base for cancer drugs, undertaking clinical trials on multiple new cancer drugs every year. A total of 15 clinical research projects have been carried out, of which 13 have been completed and 8 projects are yet to be launched, including 7 leading projects, 2 international multicenter projects, and 12 domestic multicenter projects.

In 2023, the department won 5 awards supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, first prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, and 1 project from the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. Published 16 SCI papers as first author or corresponding author. The department is the leader unit of the Oncology Specialist Training Expert Group at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and the Shanghai Oncology Medicine and Oncology Specialist Training Base. Undertake oncology teaching task of Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine and the 8-year program of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.

In 2023, 2 people will be awarded as exemplary individual in hospital teaching; Six people won the first, second, and third prizes in the case competition of Jiaotong University School of Medicine, as well as the top ten demonstration lesson plans.

The department is now the chairman unit of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) Pancreatic Cancer Expert Committee, the leader unit of the Pancreatic Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the unit of the professional committee of Integrated Oncology and Nephrology of the China Anti-Cancer Association, the deputy director unit of the Cancer Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, and the unit of the Special Committee of Difficult and Complicated Tumors of the Shanghai Anti Cancer Association. The oncology department will focus on the professionalization and refinement of disciplinary development, and build a clinical medical and academic team with complete specialties, distinct features, complete echelons, sound management, and comprehensive development of medical, teaching and research. To enhance the domestic radiation and international reputation, laying the foundation for the discipline to enter the international first-class level.
