On July 15 to 16, Urology Department of Renji Hospital successfully held the complex urinary tract calculi minimally invasive treatment summit and namesake course. On this forum, UMP (Ultra-Mini Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) China Training Center was established in our hospital.

About200 urologists from all over the country gathered together. The summit started with congratulatory speeches by Li Weiping (President of Renji Hospital), Ye Zhangqun (Director of Urology Department of Wuhan Tongji Hospital) and Xue Wei (Director of Urology Department of Renji Hospital).

Guests benefited greatly from the modern lectures, innovative surgeries and lively discussion. Either the surgeries or explanations by the experts were penetrating and easy to understand. It’s hard for theory to go clear without careful identification. The experts from all over the country speak out freely and air their own views on the minimally invasive treatment of complex upper urinary tract calculi. During the operation section, Professor Chen Qi made a live demonstration of ultrasound guided UMP surgery within only 20 minutes, which won highly appraise from the audience.Professor Desai, the father of UMP, skillfully completed an X-ray guided UMP surgery; Xia Lei from our hospital treated upper urinary tract calculi with flexible ureteroscopy, embodying profound knowledge and skill in details; the perfect lithotripsy with the third generation of Sun’s ureteroscopyby Professor Li Ling from Changhai Hospital was impressive; Professor Yu Xiaofrom Wuhansuggested another possible approach for complex upper urinary tract calculi –the Shao Gang ureteroscopy.

The opening of UMP China Training Centre was full of excitement. When Professor Desai, the father of UMP, awarded anultra-fine ureteroscopywith Professor Chen Qi’s name on it to him, applauseburst out. Thefull name of UMP was Ultra-Mini percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. It was independently invented and developed by international famous expert of urinary calculusProfessor Janak Desai in 2010, and was manufactured by German Schoelly Company. UMP is the finest endoscopein the field of urologyat recent, with a diameter of only 1 mm and an outer sheath channel of 13Fr (4mm). UMP doesn’t need expensive disposable instruments such as stone basket, grasping forceps or negative pressure suction pump.Patients can go discharged as fast as the next day after the surgery without fistula or double J tube.

Since Professor Chen Qi delivered the first UMP of the hospital in 2015, the subspecialty group of urinary calculi has completed a total of 115 UMP cases and put its clinical advantages into full play: great reduction of complications and hospitalization time compared with traditional percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Patients' personal satisfaction degree significantly increased. In March 2016, Renji urology first realized the Daytime Operation Manage Mode of UMP with 24-hour dischargein China. Current settlement of UMP training center in Renji give full affirmation and support to the subspecialty group of urinary calculi.

As the national key clinical department, Renji urology has enjoyed vigorous development under the guidance of its academic leader Professor Huang Yiran’s patient-centered concept and remained ahead in the annual national specialty rankinglist of Fudan University since 2010. Its urinary calculisub specialty is on the forefront of the country. Since Professor Xue introduced lithotripsy of Renji into the era of minimally invasive surgery with our first ureteroscopic lithotripsy in the 1990s, each update of our technology has always leaded the development of urology in China: from the use of soft lenses, ultrasound-guided puncture, development of PCNL technology, the popularity of mini PCNL to today’s UMP, each update of technology in Renji urology lead the forefront of the country and meet with the pulse of the time.

Under the leadership of Professor Xue Wei and Chen Qi and relying on the urinary endoscopy center of Renji, the urinary calculi subspecialty group has gradually developed into a domestic first-class urinary calculicenter with well-equipped hardware facilities, excellent clinical technology, leading scientific research and high-quality talent team. Now, more than 90% cases go through daytime operation mode, with more than 500 cases of PCNL, 1500 casesof rigid ureteroscopyand 600 cases of flexible ureteroscopy.

The UMP China Training Center will rely on "Yiran Education Fund" of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of medicine, and will be supported by Dr.Desai and UMP manufacturer German Schoelly Company. The center aims to popularize and promote the novel technique in the country through the platform of Renji Urology Department. Doctors in the country who have PCNL operation experience can apply to learn this technique in Renji Hospital. After graduation, students can get a certificate of recognition signed by UMP China Training Center, UMP Company as well as Dr. Desai. It can be predicted that this summit will set off a technological revolution throughout the country and UMP will flourish in China. More and more patients will  benefit from the new technology!
