On the morning of June 18, sponsored by Shanghai Human Organ Donation Office and organized by Renji Hospital, the commemoration and promotion of the breakthrough of one hundred cases of human organ donation in Shanghai was held in Eastern Division of Renji Hospital. Director of Shanghai Human Organ Donation Office and vice president of the Shanghai Branch of the Red Cross of China Gang Zhang, deputy director of Shanghai Human Organ Donation Office and deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning Xiong Zhang, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau Jingbo Zhou and other leaders attended the event. Dean of Renji Hospital Weiping Li delivered welcoming speech, and Party Secretary of Renji Hospital Bingliang Cai, vice president of Renji Hospital Daxiang Wen, deputy Party Secretary of Renji Hospital Jianying Min participated the activities. In addition there are related leaders from Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, Municipal Civilization Office, Municipal Traffic Police Corps and the city's brothers hospitals and other districts and counties of Red Cross, as well as representatives of organ donation volunteers, organ donor families and organ transplantation club. A total of 200 representatives came to the scene to participate and witness this memorable occasion. It was learned that the city's 100th case of human organ donation was achieved in Renji Hospital, while 60 percent of total organ donation in Shanghai have been completed here, ranking first in the city.
"Great Love, and sustainable life" was the theme of the event. All participants gave a deep memory for the volunteers who have realized the donation. Organ donation volunteers, organ donor families, organ transplant recipients, organ donation coordinators described their mentality at work in organ donation from their own point of view. They have said that there should be action when there is love. Organ donation is a charity to make the lives of their loved ones to get a continuation in another way, but also deliver positive energy and is an important measure to build a harmonious society. Representatives of the Organ Transplants Rehabilitation Club performed sign language chorus and dance at the event to express gratitude to all medical care coordinators, donors and the community of caring people who have helped them.
Weiping Li pointed out in his welcoming speech that the city's 100th case of organ donation was achieved in our hospital and commemoration of the breakthrough of one hundred cases of organ donation was held in our hospital. These are both a recognition of the work related to organ donation of our hospital and an incentive. He expressed his sincere gratitude to guidance from all levels of organizations, and thanks for the whole community of caring people, especially the selfless contributions of volunteers.
Gang Zhang said in his speech, orderly and regular organ donation is not only the best example of a positive commitment to social responsibility of the medical profession, but laid a good foundation to build a more harmonious society. It wil promote the development of medical science, and let more multi-organ failure patients with end-stage be newborn that is a good thing benefiting the country and people. To further promote the organ donor's spirit of love, meanwhile creating a good social atmosphere and further promoting the work of human organ donation, organ donation office in the city will increase its social face (bus, subway, community, etc.), while carrying out a series of promotional activities in hospitals in the nest half year.
Xiong Zhang said that, it is a memorable milestone for the breakthrough of one hundred cases of organ donation. The achievements reflect the hard work behind the majority of health care workers and coordinators, but also reflects great love and selfless of organ donation volunteers and their families as well as the community of caring people.
Each year there are over 1.5 million cases waiting for organ donation in China, and this number is constantly growing. World Health Organization statistics show that the number of patients who need emergency human organ transplant than the number of donated organs all over the world is 20:1, while less than 1% of patients can get the opportunity of organ transplants each year, and organ resources remain far below demand. It is reported that since December 2012, Shanghai organ donation was officially launched. The first case of voluntary organ donor of Shanghai appeared in 2013, and five cases of voluntary organ donation were realized that year which reached 55 cases in 2014. Up to June this year, the city's organ donation has exceeded 100 cases, with registered organ donor volunteers reaching 4,500 people in Shanghai. 105 people have realized donation, and donated 93 livers, 200 kidneys, and 82 cornea; wherein Renji Hospital accounted for 60 percent of Shanghai's total number of organ donation, ranking first in the city.
