       Liver Surgery Department of Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, stands out as a national clinical key specialty and a leading clinical entity in Shanghai. It hosts key clinical specialties, serves as a research center for organ transplantation and immunology engineering technology, and functions as a research institute for organ transplantation—all based in Shanghai. Additionally, it is recognized as the Shanghai Liver Transplant Quality Control Center. Renji Hospital's Liver Surgery Department is the sole national organ transplantation physician training base in Shanghai and ranks as the largest liver transplant center internationally. The department is renowned for its expertise in both adult and pediatric liver transplantation, with the latter being a signature procedure.

 

      This department has evolved into a clinical medical hub that integrates treatments for end-stage liver disease and liver cancer, incorporating minimally invasive techniques, targeted therapies, and a variety of comprehensive treatment approaches. Remarkably, in 2017 and 2018, Renji Hospital performed over 800 liver transplants each year, setting a world record for the highest number of transplants at a single center. In 2006, the department pioneered the first professional pediatric liver transplantation team in China, comprising specialists in transplant surgery, pediatric medicine, pediatric anesthesia, and intensive care. By 2023, the department had successfully completed over 3,000 pediatric liver transplants, maintaining the highest annual volume worldwide for ten consecutive years. It boasts global leadership in one-year and five-year survival rates post-transplantation.

 

      The department has spearheaded over 120 national and provincial-level research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program and the Major Research Program of the National Natural Science Foundation, among others, with research funding surpassing 100 million yuan. It has published more than 270 papers in prestigious international journals like Cell, Gut, Gastroenterology, and J Hepatology, with the highest impact factor for a single paper reaching 64.5 points.

 

      Liver Surgery Department has established the first professional committee for pediatric organ transplantation in China and has led the creation of the first "Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Pediatric Liver Transplantation in China." The department's excellence has been recognized through numerous accolades, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, and the First Prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award.
