"Before the surgery, she never smiled, just kept crying for the pain and suffering. She was too little to speak it out. Instead, she began to smile and often laughed after the surgery." Her mood is still difficult for a long time to heal, when a "new liver baby" mom looks back on the course that once let her in deep pain and bitterness finally ended.

112 children had underwent liver transplant surgery and recovered with assistance of kinds of funds and caring people since establishment of Renji Hospital liver transplant center in 2004. The age of those children ranges from 6 months to 11. All of them have been suffering from biliary atresia, poor bile duct development, cholestatic cirrhosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome or other liver diseases. Recently, these "new liver Baby" under care of their parents, come to Renji Hospital again for Follow-up, rehabilitation as well as celebration of International Children’s Day.

 "The incidence of Biliary atresia is about 1/8000-1/10000, if not treated,70%-80% of children  will die for liver failure within 2 years. 2/3 of biliary atresia children still need liver transplantation before their adulthood. 1-year survival rate after liver transplantation is over 90%, and 5-year survival can be more than 80%.” said doctor Xiaqiang Ren, director of liver surgery department, " Renji Hospital Liver Transplant Center has been established for a decade. Since the first case of pediatric liver transplant carried out in 2006, our center has treated more than 260  children with liver disease around the country. Just in last year, 76 children with liver disease had received successful liver transplantations.    Renji hospital has completed the largest number of pediatric liver transplantations nationwide. For the last eight years, Renji liver transplantation team, cooperating with specialties of Children's Medical Center and Children's Hospital, has researched and made major breakthrough in many aspects such as relative technologies about pediatric liver transplantation, immunosuppression use and immune surveillance after operation, surgical safety of living donors, postoperative growth and development, learning and life quality of pediatric receptors, etc. Till now, we have formed a set of pediatric liver transplantation technologies suitable for Chinese children and applied them across the country. That leads to a great increase of survival about children with end-stage liver diseases and lays a solid foundation for future progress and development of pediatric liver transplantation.

"Many children with end-stage liver disease caused by congenital defects or other diseases, require liver transplantations. However, take biliary atresia as an example, there are about 1500-2000 cases each year, only less than 10% of them have opportunities to receive a liver transplant. In addition to  diagnostic and technical factors, family awareness and donors, economic elements have a more important effect on the treatment of children with liver disease. Medical expense over several hundreds of thousands yuan is a heavy burden to ordinary families. Finally, many families reluctantly choose to abandon the treatments, which is not only the patient's parents’ regret, but our medical staff’s pain. "

It’s fortunate of these poor children to undergo transplantations funded by the charity. As a matter of fact, since 2011, Renji Hospital Liver Transplant Center has started to create a charity platform, working with charitable organizations and enterprises as a goal to treat more sick children. The participation of China Children Charity Relief Fund Angel Mom Foundation, China Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Company added (SMIC) and other government, community groups and the community of caring people, sends a newborn hope to more poor families with liver-disease children. 112 children in Renji hospital, got help of kinds of funds and caring people, have underwent liver transplant surgeries and discharged.

After donating two million yuan in 2013, the SMIC donated another 2 million yuan to the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation on May 29 for Renji Hospital to give poor children liver transplant surgery. On the same day the charity event held, SMIC, China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, Angel Mom Foundation, the China Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control, 9958 children emergency relief centers and other charitable organizations, as well as community representatives and caring people attended the meeting and participated in "6-1" activities with the "new liver Baby" families. When parents hold their own healthy and happy "new liver Baby", thanking for the help given by doctors and the society, medical experts appeal to more social institutions and caring people to work together with medical institutions so as to create a healthy life and better future for child with biliary atresi.
