From October 18th– 20th 2016, aseries of medical undergraduate clerkship education exchanges were organized byUniversity of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine (UO FoM) Undergraduate MedicalEducation (UGME) Office and Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM) atRenji Hospital. Dr. Melissa Forgie, Vice Dean of UO FoM, Ms. Diane Cyr, ProjectManager, OSJSM and Ms. Tammy Belanger, Project Manager OSJSM UGME participatedin the exchanges.
This 3-day event consists of clerkship observershipand workshops. For October 18th and 19th, Dr. ZHENG Qing,Assistant Dean of OSJSM, took the Ottawa partners to observe clinical teachingactivities at the General Surgery, Nephrology, Emergency, EICU of RenjiHospital and the Cardiology Department of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.The UO partners were familiarized with the clinical teaching requirements,procedures and evaluations. And they were very impressed with our clinicalteaching activities such as the small lectures, teaching ward and caseanalysis.
On October 20th, Clerkship EducationWorkshops were held at OSJSM Conference room and hosted by Dr. ZHENG Qing.Departments of Renji Hospital such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, OBGYN,Geriatrics, Emergency, Anesthesiology and Departments of Ruijin Hospital,Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, Shanghai Mental Health Center sendclerkship directors and professors to attend the workshops.
To start with, Dr. ZHENG Qing made a presentation tointroduce the general rotation arrangement at UO FoM and made a comparison ofrotation between the UO FoM and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School ofMedicine (SJTUSM). Then, Dr. Melissa Forgie presented the 12 competenciesrequired of undergraduate medical students before they start resident training,which is EPAs (Entrustable Professional Activities). She emphasized that theclerkship training should cultivate the students’ ability of independence,clinical thinking, communication skills and team spirit.
After Dr. Forgie’s presentation, our professors had aheated discussion on the UO FoM clerkship requirements and our domesticrealities, our advantages and disadvantages, opportunities and challenges. Theycame up with many valuable suggestions, especially on the teacher resource andfamily medicine model. Through this event, our departments knew more aboutOSJSM clerkship requirements and were motivated to devote more to clinicalteaching.
After the event, Dr. ZHENG Qing and Ms. Diane Cyr madea brief summary and were glad about the positive outcomes of brainstorming,which is conducive to the preparation for the clerkship stage.
