Renji Hospital established the Shanghai Human Sperm Bank in 1992 and founded the Reproductive Medicine Center in 2001. The center currently provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services related to infertility, eugenics, and fertility preservation and restoration.

The academic leader, Professor Sun Yun, is a recipient of the inaugural National Outstanding Physician Award, a National Medical Craftsman, and enjoys the State Council Special Allowance. She serves as the Deputy Director of the Reproductive Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Director of the Reproductive Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, and Director of the Shanghai Quality Control Center for Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (based at Renji Hospital).

The center has a complete range of subspecialties (reproductive gynecology, reproductive andrology, reproductive genetics, reproductive endoscopy, and traditional Chinese medicine for reproduction). It handles over 400,000 outpatient visits annually, performs nearly 10,000 IVF cycles each year, and leads Shanghai in the scale of assisted reproductive technology, with treatment success rates reaching internationally leading levels.

Building on a solid clinical foundation, the Renji reproductive team relies on a key municipal laboratory to conduct clinical translational research on major diseases affecting reproductive health. In the past five years, the team has secured over 70 major national and provincial-level projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program (led by the chief scientist), key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and international collaboration projects under the National Natural Science Foundation, as well as leading 10 high-quality clinical studies.

Renji Reproductive Medicine has established a robust academic platform. In 2009, it led the establishment of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment Center; in 2010, it founded the Shanghai Assisted Reproduction and Eugenics Technology Center; in 2012, it was approved by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission to establish the Shanghai Key Laboratory for Assisted Reproduction and Eugenics; in 2013, it became the Shanghai Branch of the National Engineering Research Center for Assisted Reproduction and Eugenics and the Collaborative Innovation Center for Assisted Reproductive and Eugenics Technologies under the Shanghai Education Commission; in 2014, it established the Shanghai Training Base for Human Assisted Reproductive Technology; in 2018, it set up the Shanghai Quality Control Center for Human Assisted Reproductive Technology; and in 2021, it became the Shanghai Fertility Preservation and Reconstruction Center. In 2023, it was designated as a Shanghai Clinical Center of Critical Importance and a Shanghai Public Health Key Discipline.
