Renji Hospital Launches China’s First AI Agent for Urology, Empowering Precision Care for 300,000 Patients

On April 22, Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, announced a major milestone in its collaboration with Ant Group: the launch of China’s first clinically validated, structured AI agent for urology. In just eight months since its launch, the AI system has served over 300,000 patients and delivered more than 600,000 responses, covering 98% of common urological diseases.

The AI agent is seamlessly integrated into the "AI Health Assistant" on Alipay. When Mr. Yao’s father, who had a history of coronary heart disease, had elevated PSA levels detected during a routine check-up, Mr. Yao searched for “urology” on Alipay and was connected to Renji’s Urology AI agent. Through the platform, he consulted Dr. Chi Chenfei from Renji Hospital’s Urology Department. Further testing, including biopsy, confirmed a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

On April 20, Renji’s urology team performed a robot-assisted single-port radical prostatectomy. "Dr. Chi, may we consult you again if any issues arise after the surgery?" asked Mr. Yao. "Absolutely. You can also continue to use the Renji Urology AI Agent. It’s a co-developed digital platform offering standardized guidance for common urological concerns," Dr. Chi replied.

Renji’s Urology AI Agent is China’s first urology-specific structured AI model for urology to undergo clinical validation. What makes it unique is the active participation of Renji’s urologists in algorithm development. Physicians directly contributed their diagnostic reasoning to craft the AI’s logic, ensuring accuracy and clinical applicability.

By simply searching “urology” on Alipay, users can access services including multi-round consultations, pre-visit assessments, medical report interpretation, tumor staging guidance, self-screening tools, and appointment scheduling.

Built on over 500,000 real-world clinical data records, the system incorporates 180,000 refined high-quality reasoning datasets. A standardized case library now covers 97.6% of urological diseases. More than 20 urology experts from Renji contributed to knowledge graph construction, enabling deep integration of frontline clinical expertise with AI technology.

"In this project, our doctors weren’t just data contributors—they were co-architects of the AI’s logic," said Dr. Pan Jiahua, Director of the Urology Department at Renji Hospital.

Professor Xue Wei, Vice President of Renji Hospital and a leading urologist, emphasized that clinical reliability in medical AI requires more than vast datasets. "True medical intelligence lies in clinical reasoning, not just uploading guidelines. Our team worked closely with engineers and annotators to embed doctors’ decision-making processes into the algorithms," he noted.

To further advance AI in medicine, Renji Hospital, Ant Group, and the People’s Medical Publishing House are co-developing a professional-grade AI medical database. The goal is to enhance diagnostic performance and enable the deployment of medical AI in grassroots healthcare institutions.

This initiative marks a significant step toward accessible, high-quality digital health services in China and represents a model for future physician-AI collaboration.
