The Department of Pain Management at Renji Hospital was established in 1988 by Professor Hang Yan-nan. Over the past thirty years, the medical, teaching, and scientific research work on chronic pain has continuously developed. The department currently helps patients in the East, West, and South main campuses along with the Renji Internet Hospital. In addition, the department helps patients at affiliated hospitals such as Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Hospital, Baoshan Dachang Hospital, Wuxi SK Hospital, Punan Hospital, and Pujiang Hospital.
In 2023, Renji Pain department provided compassionate care for over thirty thousand patients from Overseas and Domestic. The patients displayed a wide range of painful disorders, especially neuropathic pain such as herpes zoster neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, painful diabetic neuropathy, cancer pain, chronic
back pain, and many other complex pain cases. Physical therapies, including shock wave therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, high-energy laser
therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and ultrasound guided nerve block, are carried out in the outpatient clinic.Renji Pain physicians offer the complete spectrum of advanced pain management therapies. Real time fluoroscopic guided pain surgery including Percutaneous Balloon Compression (PBC) of the trigeminal ganglion, radiofrequency ablation of pain nerves, Percutaneous Kyphoplasty (PKP/PVP), foramenoscopic discectomy, Unilateral Biportall Endoscopic (UBE), and spinal canal decompression and platelet-rich plasma injection (PRP) are routinely performed. Furthermore, neuromodulation technics such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and intrathecal drug continuous infusion system implantation (Pain PUMP) solved many difficult refractory pain problems.
Since 2018, Renji Forum on Pain Neuroscience and Clinical Transformation was held annually. The forum gathered many global pain medical and research experts, and combined simulated teaching of ultrasound guided pain management procedure. “New progress in Pain Neuromodulation” training courses ensuredmore doctors to receive comprehensive, innovative, and supportive education.

established in 2018 It has been running regularly to date and publishing original high-quality popular science and teaching articles on pain medicine. The account, receiving praise from multiple media outlets and reprints, has nearly three thousand subscribers covering the whole country. On“Global day against pain" large-scale free clinic is held each year with monthly popular science lectures conducted in residential communities.
