In May 2021, Brain Injury Center was formally established, which is an independent clinical department run by Dr. Feng Junfeng as the director.
The center focuses on emergency surgery for craniocerebral trauma, cerebral hemorrhage, and other brain injuries caused by various reasons. It also specializes in the treatment of various neurological critical conditions, coma awakening, neural function recovery, and post-traumatic and post-hemorrhagic complications, such as cranioplasty, hydrocephalus, and epilepsy treatment. Currently, there are 11 full-time clinicians, all of whom hold doctoral degrees.
The center boasts three doctoral supervisors and two master's supervisors, with a total of 16 graduate students currently enrolled. The center also possesses a dedicated research platform known as the Shanghai Brain Trauma Institute. Currently, there are three full-time research staff, all of whom hold doctoral degrees. The team has been funded by various grants, including subprojects of the 973 Program (3 projects), the National Health Special Fund, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (25 projects).
The Brain Injury Center predecessor is the Neurosurgery Brain Trauma and Neurocritical Care Professional Group of Renji Hospital. Over its 18-year history, Professor Jiang Jiyao has held positions such as Chairman of the International Society of Neurotraumatology and Director of the Trauma Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The Renji Hospital Brain Trauma Team has been awarded numerous honors, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award. Individual team members have also been recognized with the Wang Zhongcheng Neurosurgery Physician Award (3 recipients), the Wang Zhengguo Trauma Medicine Award for Innovation, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leaders (3 recipients), Shanghai Yinshe Award (3 recipients), and Shanghai Youth Commando (collective).
In recent years, the clinical rescue and treatment of the Renji Brain Trauma Team has reached an internationally advanced level. They maintain close exchanges with well-known international clinical and research institutions and have published six articles in the top international journal "Lancet Neurology." Additionally, they have taken the lead in developing 13 expert consensuses related to clinical rescue and treatment in China. They have also edited 10 monographs, including "Modern Craniocerebral Injury," "Diagnosis and Treatment of Craniocerebral Trauma," and "Guidance for the Rescue and Treatment of Craniocerebral Trauma." The team has become one of the domestically recognized and leading centers for the rescue and treatment of craniocerebral trauma and neurocritical care.
