The Renji Hospital General Practice Teaching Base was established in 2006 and is one of the first three standardized training clinical bases for general practitioners in Shanghai. Starting from April 2019, the hospital has independently established a general medicine department, with a total of 11 physicians, including 5 with associate senior or higher professional titles.

The department currently has two general wards in the hospital area and multiple outpatient clinics, including general outpatient clinics, multi drug specialty clinics, and chronic disease comprehensive specialty clinics. Emphasizing a patient-centered and biopsychosocial medical model, serving as a gatekeeper of health. To solve the problem of patients' "not knowing what department to hang, unclear etiology, coexistence of multiple diseases, multiple drugs", carry out the first diagnosis and graded diagnosis and treatment for undifferentiated diseases with unknown etiology, and carry out comprehensive management for common and frequent chronic diseases, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as various health consultations and medical care.

At the same time, the department leverages the resource advantages and leading effect of municipal tertiary hospitals to "sink" high-quality medical resources, improve the level of grassroots medical care, meet the needs of the public for nearby medical treatment, and jointly build a close medical alliance with Punan Branch to establish a general medicine department in Punan Branch. Through the launch of "double signing" and "Shanghai General Medicine Education and Training Center Network Base", the school hospital local collaboration is carried out to enhance the ability of grassroots community health services, extend the radiation range of Renji's high-quality medical resources to the grassroots, and meet the multi-level medical and health service needs of community residents.

The teaching team of the department has received multiple grants in undergraduate, regular training, graduate, and continuing education training, including national and municipal first-class courses and post graduation education projects. They have also won awards in municipal simulation teaching, CBL, PBL, and course ideological and political design projects. The members of the department have successively won support from the Pujiang Talent Plan, Shanghai University Teacher Training Plan, and Shanghai Medical Yuan New Star Plan. The comprehensive community teaching bases are located in three community health service centers in Pudong New Area, namely Weifang, Huamu, and Tangqiao. Among them, Weifang and Huamu Community Health Service Centers were awarded the first batch of standardized training demonstration community teaching bases for resident physicians in Shanghai in 2021. Since its establishment, the base has trained more than 200 general practitioners, continuously delivering a batch of social responsibility, skilled, ethical, and comprehensive general practitioner talents to community medical institutions.
