The Department of Urology, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, has a long history and profound foundation. In the 1950s, through the unremitting efforts of China's first generation of urologists, Professor Chen Bangdian and Professor Wang Yijing , the prototype of the Department of Urology of Renji Hospital was gradually formed; and then Professor Jiang Yu established an independent Department of Urology in the late 1960s. Under the leadership of successive directors, Professor Jiang Yu, Professor Wu Jiajun, and Professor Wang Yixin, the department has gradually matured. After entering the 21st century, under the leadership of Professor Huang Yiran and current department director Professor Xue Wei , the department has developed by leaps and bounds. In 2022, Renji Urology decisively stepped out of the "comfort zone" and gradually moved its headquarter to the old hospital campus on the west bank of the Huangpu River. Then, "Going west" became a new starting point for Renji Urology.
"Renji Urology" is currently the key clinical specialty of the National Health Commission, the key discipline of the Ministry of Education-211 Project, the key discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the only urology clinical quality control center in Shanghai, and the leader of Yangtze River Delta Urological Surgery Alliance. The Shanghai Institute of Andrology and the editorial office of Chinese Journal of Andrology are affiliated to the department. Renji Urology has always ranked among the top in the national specialty leaderboards.
The department has huge scale with 238 beds. It currently has the most comprehensive urology sub-specialty settings in China, including kidney tumors, prostate tumors, bladder tumors, endourology and stone disease, andrology, neurourology and urodynamics, urology plastic surgery, pediatric urology, kidney transplantation and urological emergency. In recent years, the clinical volume of the department has been steadily increasing. In 2023, the total number of outpatient and emergency visits was nearly 446,000, and the total number of surgeries reached 27,000. In the meantime, various medical indicators have been continuously optimized. According to statistics on of key diseases in Shanghai, the number of surgeries for kidney tumors and bladder tumors has ranked first in Shanghai for five consecutive years, and the number of surgeries for prostate tumors has also ranked among the top two in the city. The number of da Vinci robotic surgeries ranks first in China.
In terms of scientific research, "Renji Urology" on the one hand cooperates with top international and domestic scientists, on the other hand it focuses on strengthening the own laboratories construction and has achieved a number of original results. In the past five years, it has undertaken 52 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including national key instrument projects and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission key projects, ect. A-totalof 258 papers with original research results have been published in international top journals such as Nat Cancer, Nat Commun and J Clin Invest. Meanwhile, 7 monographs on urological oncology have been published. A series of awards such as the first prize of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of Ministry of Education, the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and the first prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award .
At the same time, the rigorous training system for young urologists has cultivated a group of clinical scientists with an international perspective, guaranteed sustainable development of the department. The department also maintains long-term and in-depth cooperation and exchanges with world-renowned medical centers or urology departments such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic, and so on.
In the future , "Renji Urology" will continue to focus on high-quality clinical services , with clinical scientific research and translational research as academic support, with competent clinicians as the core, and with well-designed sub-specialties as the framework , constantly improving the quality of care and striving to become a first-class clinical center of urology in the world.
