The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Department of Renji Hospital, founded in 1953, has a rich history of over 70 years. Renji PM&R integrates clinical medicine, teaching and research into comprehensive development. We actively cooperate with other clinical departments and provide early rehabilitation at bedside for patients of Orthopaedics, Intensive Care Unit, Geriatrics, and Neurology with all causes of traumatic or non-traumatic injuries. Comprehensive and advanced rehabilitation treatment is administered after the patient is transferred to the Rehabilitation ward. More than 36,000 outpatients come here to be treated by Renji PM&R specialists each year. We help restore movement and function to people limited by disease or injury of brain, spinal cord, nerves and the musculoskeletal system. The treatment effect has been praised by outpatient.

Previous directors of Renji PM&R had served as vice chairman of Chinese Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and vice president of Shanghai Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. The current director of Renji PM&R, Prof. Chen Zhen, serves as chairman of Intensive Care Committee of Shanghai Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, Outstanding Figure of Shanghai Rehabilitation Technology, vice chairman of Disorders of Consciousness Committee of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, and vice chairman of Brain Function Detection and Regulation Committee of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. Renji PM&R department has edited and translated more than 20 monographs, and hosted successfully national continuing education programs for many times. We preside over and participate in projects of Ministry of Science and Technology, National Health Commission, International Cooperation and Teaching.

In 2023, Renji PM&R department obtained the official license of Organ and Intensive Care Rehabilitation Research Center, jointly constructed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and China Pacific Insurance Group.
