Recently, Department of Vascular Surgery in our hospital successfully saved a French patient with bilateral renal artery thrombosis and partial renal infarction through minimally invasive endovascular intervention therapy. The whole treatment saved the ischemic kidney without needles or thread, and received "Thumbs up" from international friends.

Stephane, from Paris, France, had back pain without any obvious incentive five days earlier. The patient didn’t feel any improvement after receiving anti-inflammation and analgesic therapy in a well-known international medical institution in Shanghai. Abdominal CTA showed acute bilateral renal artery thrombosis and infarction at upper part of the right kidney. There was a small amount of ascites, and the level of serum creatinine was slightly elevated. The patient’s situation was urgent, whereas complete renal infarction or acute renal failure was likely to develop once delayed. The agency invited Director Lan Zhang from Department of Vascular Surgery in our hospital for consultation and the patient was transferred to our hospital urgently, when it came to 10 o'clock at night. After joint assessment by exports from Department of Urology, Department of Nephrology and Department of Radiology, a detailed treatment plan was developed. Within 2 hours after admission, the Deputy Chief Physician from Department of Vascular Surgery Guanhua Xue, together with Xupin Xie, Shuofei Yang and other surgeons worked throughout the night to complete the renal artery angiography + local thrombolysis + balloon dilation treatment. The patient's waist pain was obviously relieved after surgery, his kidney function returned to normal, and the bilateral ischemic kidneys were promptly rescued. The patient gave "Thumbs up" to the surgeons in Department of Vascular Surgery and exclaimed: "In France, it is almost impossible for patients to receive such efficient and quick medical treatment. It is impressive that Chinese doctors are superb and decisive."

Visceral ischemic disease involves the treatment of ischemic organs in addition to addressing the target vessel disease. Its diagnosis and treatment is complex that often requires joint diagnosis and treatment by multidisciplinary team. Department of Vascular Surgery in our hospital play the technical advantages of minimally invasive intravascular intervention therapy, relying on the platform of multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment, and have taken a leading domestic position in the treatment of mesenteric ischemia, renal ischemia and other visceral ischemic diseases. Director Lan Zhang from Department of Vascular Surgery, pointed out that renal artery thrombosis or embolism refers to thrombosis or embolism blockage at trunk or its branch of the renal artery, leading to renal ischemia that often cause renal infarction and even renal failure in severe cases. Renal artery thrombosis or embolism is visceral ischemic disease, and the key to save the patient is to open up the occluded blood vessels as early as possible to restore blood supply of organs. However, clinically, visceral ischemic disease is often confused by various departments, so that delays the best timing of treatment. Department of Vascular Surgery from Renji hospital opened a "green channel" for the treatment of such patients. Minimally invasive intravascular intervention therapy was used to open the occluded blood vessels as soon as possible, combined with multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment to provide an efficient platform for the treatment of such patients.
