Department of Neurosurgery, RenJi Hospital initially started as early as 1956, now it is the national clinical key specialty of the Ministry of Public Health, national key discipline of Project 211 of the Ministry of Education, and also national key (cultivation) discipline of the Ministry of Education.
It is the home of Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Training Center and Asian Neurosurgeon Joint Committee PuJiang Training Center.

For different kinds of neurosurgical disease, we offer professional and tailored plan for every individual patient.
There are multi sub-speciality fields in our department, such as, neuro-endoscopic minimal invasive surgery, cerebral vascular disease, hybrid surgery, functional neurosurgery, spinal disease and pediatric neurosurgery.
We have very professional and skillful in tumor microsurgery, endoscopic surgery, treatment of cerebral vascular disease, intensive care monitoring, and spinal cord surgery.
Domestically, we are among the front runners in the scale and ability of neurosurgical practice, in discipline development, talent training and in general academic level.
There are 125 beds in our department (of which 19 beds are of Intensive Care Unit), 38 doctors, 91 registered nurses, 3 technicians and 1 laboratory researcher.
Quite a few doctors have won national awards, such as, Qiushi Outstanding Youth Award of China, Young and Middle-aged Outstanding Contribution Experts of the Ministry of Public Health, Shanghai Medical Leading Talents, Shanghai Elite of Science and Technology, Shanghai Silver Snake Award, Shanghai Rising Star of Medicine, Shanghai Morning Star, Shanghai “Double Hundred” Talents, Shanghai Excellent Youth, China Wang Zhong Cheng Excellent Neurosurgeon Award, Wang Zheng Guo Traumatic Medicine Innovation Award, etc.
In the year of 2023, out-patient and emergency visit are 35 thousand, 34 hundred patients are discharged, 31 hundred operations are conducted annually, of all these 31 hundred operations, 21 hundred are classified as 3rd and 4th level.
Glioma and meningioma are the 2 key diseases in the statistics of Shanghai ShenKang Hospital Development Center, RenJi ranked No 2 in the 5 consecutive years from 2017 to 2022.
We have 12 projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation in the recent 3 years, 7 sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Committee of Science and Technology, 2 sponsored by Shanghai Municipal of Committee of Public Health, 3 sponsored by Shanghai Shen Kang Hospital Development Center, total sponsorship as high as 8 million RMB.
In recent years, Department of Neurosurgery has won the 2nd Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the 2nd Prize of HuaXia Medical Technology Award, the 1st Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, the 1st Prize of Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, and the 2nd Prize of Science and Technology of Chinese Medicine, etc.
1 innovation patent, more than 10 practical new patents have been registered. More than 300 papers have been published, total Influence Index is higher than 550. More than 90 these papers are published in journals with Influence Index higher than 5. Including these well-known international professional journals, such as Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Neuro-oncology, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurotrauma, Journal of Neurochemistry, Journal of Neuroinflammation, etc.
Department of Neurosurgery is highly competitive in clinical practice, medical education and laboratory research, with adequate talent echelon, and good academic atmosphere.
