The Department of Psychological Medicine at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM), is a member unit of the Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP), the Vice Chair Unit of the Shanghai Medical Association-Psychiatric Specialty Branch, the Vice President Unit of the Shanghai Psychological Service Association, as well as a core unit of the Shanghai Clinical Research Center for Mental Health (SCRC-MH). It integrates clinical, research, teaching, and public outreach functions and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, offering full-fledged disease management for patients with anxiety disorders, somatic symptom disorders, depressive disorders, and sleep disorders. Its clinical treatments include psychological evaluation, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychological rehabilitation, supported by dedicated physical rehabilitation treatment rooms, psychological evaluation rooms, and psychotherapy rooms.
The Department of Psychological Medicine at Renji Hospital, SJTUSM, currently operates outpatient clinics and physical rehabilitation treatment rooms, psychological assessment rooms, and psychotherapy rooms in both the East and West campuses. It has six full-time psychiatrist, one nurse, one psychotherapist, and one medical secretary. With an annual outpatient volume exceeding 40,000 visits, the department specializes in anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Intervention plans, including pharmacological and psychological interventions, are tailored for each patient. The department undertakes numerous national, provincial, and municipal projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation Regional Joint Key Program, the National Natural Science Foundation General Program, as well as conducting multicenter clinical research projects on the study of pathogenesis of depression with sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain.
The team at Renji Psychiatry is actively engaged in public education on mental health and has created various forms of popular science materials including short films, animations, stage plays, and popular science sketches, winning dozens of national awards while undertaking a project for the first round of Shanghai Health Science Popularization Talent Ability Enhancement Program. In terms of pedagogy, the department is responsible for theoretical courses, internships, and graduate student training at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and its affiliated medical school (SJTUSM).
In terms of international cooperation, the Psychiatry Department at Renji Hospital was the first to introduce Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) techniques into China and has conducted multiple IPT training sessions with participants from across the country. The
Department Director, Dr. Luoyan Li, currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the China Division of The International Society of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (ISIPT-China) and is an ISIPT certified supervisor. The Department of Psychological Medicine at Renji Hospital will continue to strengthen cooperation with domestic and foreign hospitals and medical schools, exchange advanced ideas, and expand treatment techniques to provide patients with better medical services.
