The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Renji Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is composed of gynecology and obstetrics. It has a glorious history of development. After several generations of unremitting efforts, it has been built into a national "211 Project" key construction discipline, a national clinical key specialty, a national quality course, a Shanghai top priority discipline, a Shanghai clinical key specialty, a Shanghai gynecological oncology key laboratory, a Shanghai critical pregnant woman consultation and rescue center, a Shanghai obstetric heart disease monitoring center, etc.  The department has 181 beds, more than 400,000 outpatient and emergency visits per year, 12,000 inpatient visits and more than 10,000 surgeries annually. The success rate of rescuing critically ill patients is over 95%. There are 85 doctors and 9 scientific researchers in this discipline, including 7 doctoral supervisors and 11 master’s mentors.

This discipline has become an important clinical, teaching and research base of obstetrics and gynecology in China. It has distinctive features and significant advantages in clinical diagnosis, treatment and basic research in difficult and complicated gynecologic tumors, critical obstetrics, reproductive immunity and other fields, and occupies a leading position in China. It took the lead in establishing MDT comprehensive diagnosis and treatment center of gynecological tumor around China, which includes clinical and basic research experts. The annual number of tumor patients ranks first in comprehensive hospitals of Shanghai. Difficult cases account for 35%, ranking first in Shanghai. The center significantly improves the prognosis of tumor patients. More than 40% of critically ill pregnant and postpartum women of Shanghai are rescued in the department every year, with a rescue success rate of over 95%. About 15000 patients with recurrent miscarriage are diagnosed and treated in the department every year, over 90% of which are successfully treated.

Over the past five years, it has successively received more than 100 projects funded by national, ministerial and municipal scientific research funds, including 1 major scientific research project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 support project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 national key research and development projects, 40 national natural fund projects, with a total funding of 130 million yuan.  The chief or deputy chief have edited 13 monographs and teaching books, published more than 400 papers included in SCI, and authorized 4 national invention patents.  It as the first finisher, won the national second prize for scientific and technological progress, the national first prize for outstanding achievements in population and family planning, the second prize for Chinese medicine, the second prize for scientific and technological progress awarded by the Ministry of education, the second prize for scientific and technological progress in Shanghai, the first prize for medical science and technology in Shanghai, etc.

The discipline focuses on academic exchanges both in China and abroad. In the past five years, it has been hosted more than 30 conferences, including "Pujiang International Forum on Gynecological Oncology", "Pujiang International Reproductive Immune Summit " and " National Continuing Medical Education Class for Pregnancy Complicated with Heart Disease", with nearly 15,000 participants.  It has undertaken 2 national-level continuing education classes. It has participated in the formulation of more than 20 items of Chinese clinical expert consensus and industry guidelines, of which 8 were led.
