(Correspondent Ming Dai & Translator Yujun Sun ) On May 1st to 3rd, Shanghai Forum of Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society and the 3rd hands-on workshop of skull base surgery hosted by Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Training Center were successfully held in China Pudong Cadre College and Shanghai Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Training Center. The forum was hosted by Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society and was undertaken by The Southern Division of Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It was learnt from the Forum that the Asian Training Center of Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society has officially settled in the Southern Division of Renji Hospital.
Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society, named by one of the premier fathers of operative neurosurgery, Walter Edward Dandy, is the sole global representative for "operative neurosurgery", whose mission is to provide a common platform for communication and cooperation among neurosurgeons. It’s the first time for this forum to be held in China. Nearly 20 worldwide known experts in surgical procedures and Chinese young elites attended for academic exchanges, and more than 200 neurosurgeons worldwide joined this forum. Prof. Yu Wang (Vice president of The Southern Division of Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiaotong University) delivered the welcome speech and unveiled the Asian Training Center of Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society together with Academician Ji-Zong Zhao, Prof. Saleem I.Abdulrauf and Prof. Jian-Ning Zhang.
During the forum, Academician Ji-Zong Zhao (Honorary President of China) and Prof. Saleem I.Abdulrauf (Honorary President of International), delivered lectures (“Neurosurgery and Hybridization Operative Room” and “Future Directions in Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery” respectively) and shared their operative skills, experience and concepts in cerebral tumor, cerebrovascular and spinal diseases with scholars home and abroad.
At the same time, the 3rd hands-on workshop of skull base surgery invited Prof. Yoko Kato (chairman of Education and Training Committee of the WFNS, Secretary of WFNS Foundation, professor of Fujita Health University) to give a lecture. Prof. Yoko Kato highlights skull base surgery approaches and relevant operative techniques with fresh samples through video exhibition and students’ microscope operation.
As National Key Clinical Specialty of National Health and Family Planning Commission, the department of neurosurgery of Shanghai Renji Hospital has accumulated a wealth of experience in clinical diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury, neurological intensive care, microsurgical and endoscopic techniques in brain tumor as well as comprehensive treatment of cerebrovascular disease. Especially, our treatment level of traumatic brain injury has already achieved international leading rank. With adherence to the traditions and advantages of Renji Hospital, the department of neurosurgery in the Southern Division, at the leadership of the Executive Director Xiaohua Zhang, focused on differentiation in its development and emphasize the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. Subspecialty group such as minimally invasive treatment in skull base tumors, cerebrovascular and spinal diseases has taken shape. The procedural quantity, quality and difficulty of the department have increased year by year.
According to Dr. Xiao-Hua Zhang, the settlement of Asian Training Center of Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society means more training courses in Shanghai for Asian neurosurgeons, which will bring about the latest frontier and experience in neurosurgery, enhance exchanges and collaboration, and boost the rapid development of Dept. neurosurgery in the Southern Division of Renji Hospital.
