The department of stomatology of Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, with a long history, is the core unit authorized by the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Medicine. Renji Hospital established its dentistry department in the 1930s and renamed it stomatology department after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The stomatology department of Renji Hospital was initially headed by chair Huang Xizhang, and then continuously grew and thrived under the leadership of successive department chairs including Xu Yuying, Wang Pinzhen, Lu Qun, Yu Li, and Lu Eryi. Based on the platform of general dentistry and with the purpose to optimize services, a tiered diagnosis and treatment system is actively promoted. Following the concept of one-stop holistic design, an oral multidisciplinary advanced oral diagnosis and treatment center characterized by implantology and prosthodontics is established.
The stomatology department has outpatient clinics in the East, West, and South campuses. After the renovation and expansion of the East Campus, the usable area exceeded 1,000 square meters, providing 45 chair positions, 7 special consulting rooms, and 2 outpatient implantation rooms. Equipped with advanced equipment and instruments such as CAD/CAM chairside systems, oral laser devices, microscopes for root canal treatment, ultrasonic bone scalpels, and high-frequency electrosurgical knives, the stomatology department offers comprehensive medical services covering multiple sub-disciplines in dentistry, including oral implantology, prosthodontics, alveolar surgery, orthodontics, periodontal diseases, endodontics, and oral mucosal diseases. Projects are comprehensively carried out like 3D printing, immediate or delayed implant-supported fixed or removable prostheses, GBR technology, CAD/CAM all-ceramic crowns, veneers, post-and-core crowns, inlays, onlays, titanium alloy removable dentures, BPS full dentures, occlusal rehabilitation using fixed or removable prosthesis, restoration after orthodontics or periodontal treatment, and combined implant-orthodontic restorations. The annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 110,000 person-times.
Since 2017, under the leadership of chair Lu Eryi, the department team has been constantly expanding, with the improvement of management structure and teaching staff. It has a group of high-quality teachers with a combination of the old, the middle-aged, and the young, who are prominent in medical teaching and research. Currently, there are 47 doctors in the department, including 1 chief physician, 10 associate chief physicians (4 doctors and 42 masters). There are 12 professional dental technicians and 20 professional dental nurses. There is 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 master's supervisors, cultivating students in eight-year, seven-year, and postgraduate programs for oral clinical medicine and undertaking the teaching tasks for undergraduate students of Renji Medical College and the training of further education doctors. Additionally, it serves as a practical training base for oral medicine technology majors at the Health Medical College. Many doctors have gone to medical schools, laboratories, and dental technician workshops in the United States, Germany, Japan, and other countries for exchange and learning. They have served as deputy directors, standing committee members, committee members, and young committee members in various academic organizations, including the Continuing Stomatology Education Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Shanghai Stomatological Medical Association and its sub-discipline associations, Shanghai Medical Doctor Association and its sub-discipline associations, and the Oral Medicine Branch of the Bethune Spirit Research Association. 7 national-level projects and over 10 provincial and municipal-level projects have been successively obtained. More than 50 SCI papers have been published in internationally and domestically authoritative academic journals and 6 national patents have been authorized. Clinical diagnosis and treatment are organically combined with basic scientific research to mutually promote each other, guiding the development of the discipline with scientific theories.
