The Allergy Department of Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is a national key clinical specialty construction unit of allergy, one of the characteristic specialties of Renji Hospital, and also one of the earliest established institutions for the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases in China. At present, it maintains academic exchanges and cooperation with multiple high-level allergy prevention and treatment institutions both internationally and domestically, and enjoys a high reputation nationwide.

The Allergy Department of Renji Hospital was founded by renowned Chinese allergists Professor Xu Yiping and Professor Guo Yinshi. And the incumbent director of the Allergy Department is a well-known immunology expert, Professor Chen xiaoxiang.

Currently, the Allergy Department has allergic clinic, specialized clinic, expert clinic, VIP clinic, allergic ward, allergen testing room, standardized immunotherapy (desensitization and biological targeted therapy) room , as well as allergic laboratory (research room).

In the field of allergen diagnosis, it covers inhalation, ingestion, contact, and injection allergens. In terms of in vitro diagnosis, the Allergy Department has multiple internationally advanced fully-automated system for allergen detection; In terms of in vivo diagnosis, it has skin prick test, intradermal test and patch test, and also has complex and difficult food/drug challenge test. A relatively complete specific and non-specific diagnosis system for allergic diseases has been established.

In the treatment of allergic diseases, a standardized specific allergy immunotherapy center (certified by IQAP) has been established to carry out characteristic prevention and treatment measures such as specific and non-specific immunotherapy, integrated treatment of Chinese and western medicine, biological targeted therapy, subcutaneous/sublingual/oral desensitization, combined biologics and desensitization, allergen monitoring and control, etc. A relatively complete system for the prevention and standardized treatment of allergic diseases has been constructed.

The department has achieved a series of advanced achievements in the research and treatment of the relationship between mites and the onset of bronchial asthma. The allergic research achievement, "Mite allergy and bronchial asthma," has won the second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the State Education Commission. In recent years, the department has participated in the development of more than ten domestic guidelines or expert consensus in the field of diagnosis and treatment of allergic disease. And in 2022, it was commended for meritorious service by the Shanghai Education Commission.

The scope of diagnosis and treatment in the Allergy Department includes various allergic and allergy-related diseases, including allergic rhinitis/sinusitis, allergic conjunctivitis, bronchial asthma, chronic cough, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), allergic pneumonia, urticaria, angioedema (including hereditary angioedema/HAE), atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact allergic dermatitis, allergic purpura, anaphylaxis and allergic shock, food allergy, drug allergy, environmental factor allergy, eosinophilic diseases (including eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis/EGPA, eosinophilic gastroenteritis-esophagitis or bronchitis, etc.), and diseases with elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) , etc.
