Department of Radiology, Ren Ji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a national clinical key specialty, a key discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, a key discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and one of the first batch of standardized training bases for resident physicians and specialist physicians in Shanghai. It is also a doctoral degree granting unit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a postdoctoral research station. The department is distributed across five major campuses: eastern district, western district, southern district, northern district, and Hangzhou Bay New Zone district, providing medical services covering the Yangtze River Delta region. Equipped with state-of-the-art medical and research equipment, including hybrid operating rooms, multiple high-end 3.0 T MR scanners, wide-detector spectral CT scanners, DSA machines, and a 7.0 T MR scanner for small animals, the department utilizes a RIS-PACS system to achieve remote diagnosis and treatment across campuses. Intelligent image diagnosis assistance systems and advanced image post-processing software are furnished to enhance the efficiency and precision of daily imaging diagnosis. Specialized outpatient services for radiographs reading, special need clinic for radiographs reading, and expert clinic are all offered to provide patients with specialized, refined, and personalized radiological examinations and diagnoses.

In recent years, Department of Radiology in Ren Ji Hospital has dedicated itself to becoming a new type of radiology department led by teaching and research in molecular imaging, high-end functional imaging of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, medical imaging big data platforms, tumor radiomics, and artificial intelligence imaging. It has developed two sub-specialties with distinct features: integrated cerebro-cardiovascular imaging (mainly including cerebrovascular diseases and brain functional imaging, cardiovascular MRI, and carotid artery vessel wall MRI) and precision tumor imaging (mainly including multi-modal MRI system for brain tumors, spectral CT and functional MRI for lung tumors, high-resolution and MR spectroscopy imaging for urological tumors, precision imaging and preoperative localization for breast tumors, specific contrast agents for liver and bile ducts, free-breathing liver MRI for children, precision imaging diagnosis of digestive tract tumors using CT and MRI, multi-modal MRI evaluation of gynecological tumors, and imaging diagnosis and efficacy evaluation of malignant lymphoma). Additionally, the department pays special attention to the clinical application and scientific research of infection- and inflammation-related imaging. Prof. Yan Zhou, the current director of the Department of Radiology, was elected as the first chairman of the Infection and Inflammation Imaging Professional Committee of the Shanghai Research-oriented Hospital Association in 2023.

Over the years, the department has undertaken 35 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and more than 30 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels. It has published over 600 articles in various journals, with more than 300 articles indexed by SCI (E) / EI, and many monographs published in top international journals in related fields (such as Radiology, Stroke, ATVB, etc.). It has won several honors including the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Awards (second / third prize), the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Awards (second prize), the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Awards (third prize), and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Awards (second prize). The department has edited monographs such as "MRI Diagnosis of Knee Joint", "Rheumatological Imaging", "CT Diagnosis of Diffuse Lung Diseases", "Atlas of Abdominal Imaging Anatomy", and "Imaging Diagnosis and Clinical Application of Crohn's Disease", and participated in the compilation of more than 30 other books. It has been granted more than 10 domestic or international invention patents and software copyrights.

The Department of Radiology currently has three doctoral supervisors and five master's supervisors. Over 90% of the physicians in the department hold master's degrees or above. The department not only undertakes undergraduate and eight-year medical education tasks of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the Shanghai-Ottawa Joint Medical Program, but also is responsible for the training of graduate students, resident physicians, specialist physicians, and visiting scholars in radiology and continuing education programs. It regularly holds workshops such as "Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technology and Advances", "New Technologies, Methods, and Clinical Applications of Neuroimaging", and "Tumor Imaging Diagnosis and Applications of New Technologies".
