Department of Laboratory Medicine, Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was Founded in 1946 by Deng Yulan, one of the first female pathologists in China. It has evolved into a modern laboratory medicine discipline that integrates medical practice, teaching and research. Additionally, it operates as a clinical in vitro diagnostic center encompassing five subspecialties: clinical biochemistry and mass spectrometry, clinical immunology, clinical microbiology, hematology and molecular biology. Prof. Min Li is the director of Department of Laboratory Medicine.
      The department of Laboratory Medicine has established clinical laboratories in the four campuses located in the East, West, South and North. These labs are equipped with advanced instrumentation, offering more than 1000 different diagnostic tests and are staffed with highly qualified personnel. They effectively utilize the clinical platform to support the academic discipline and are capable of fulfilling various requirements of clinical practice and research.


The Department of Laboratory Medicine is responsible for teaching "Laboratory Diagnostics" and "Pathogenic Microbiology." It also participates in the theoretical and practical teaching of courses such as "Laboratory Diagnostics", "Clinical Microbiology Examination" and "Fundamentals of Clinical Laboratory Testing" for students majoring in Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Medical Laboratory Science. The department is one of the first training bases for clinical pathologists in Shanghai and a standardized training site for resident physicians in the city. It provides clinical consultation and support services related to the clinical significance and selection of laboratory diagnostic projects.
       The Department of Laboratory Medicine has an innovative research team. It serves as a training site for master's, doctoral and postdoctoral candidates in Clinical Diagnostics. The team currently includes four doctoral advisors and two master's advisors and has undertaken over 60 projects funded at the national and provincial/municipal levels. They have published more than 100 SCI papers. The department has established friendly academic cooperative relationships with institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States and Tübingen University in Germany. With the continuous and stable development in medical care, teaching and research, the academic influence of the department in the same field is continuously increasing both domestically and internationally.
