The Department of Anesthesiology in Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is the Key Clinical Specialty in Shanghai, the National Key Professional Base for Standardized Training of Anesthesia Residents, and the chairman unit of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology for now, meanwhile, has the Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Ministry of Education and Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Perioperative Organ Support and Function Protection. The latest ranking of anesthesia disciplines released by the Hospital Management Research Institute of Fudan University shows that the department of anesthesiology in Renji Hospital ranks the 4th in China and the 1st in East China. Currently, our department has 8 doctoral supervisors and 6 master supervisors. It has cultivated one chief scientist of the major research program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, one winner of National Science fund for Excellent Young Scholars and one top young talent of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Seven people in our department have been sponsored by Shanghai Rising-Star Program.

        In 2023, the number of anesthesia operations in Renji Hospital exceeded 210,000 cases, ranking first in Shanghai for many years in a row, and the amount of anesthesia for third-level and fourth-level major operations has come out in front. More than 600 cases of adult and pediatric liver transplantation and more than 400 cases of kidney transplantation are completed in Renji Hospital every year. As the world's largest liver transplantation center, Renji Hospital has led the formulation and participated in the release of several clinical guidelines related to liver transplantation anesthesia. Furthermore, Day surgery anesthesia accounts for more than 45% among operations in Renji hospital, ranking first in China, which has become a national standard. Besides, our department undertakes the anesthesia and emergency work for more than half of critically ill puerperia and all puerperia with heart disease in Shanghai.

       Our department has been the director unit of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for more than a decade, and has long been responsible for the theoretical teaching, probation and internship teaching of anesthesia students from the Department of Clinical Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Xuzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Medical University, Wannan Medical College and Bengbu Medical College et al. As the first batch of anesthesia resident standardized training base and anesthesia specialist training base in Shanghai, it has been rated as the national key professional base for the standardized training of residents since 2020. The course of Critical Care Medicine has been rated as the excellent course in Shanghai, the English course of Anesthesiology has been rated as the key course at the municipal level in universities located in Shanghai, and the first-class undergraduate course of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

       The department has been committed to the basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis of chronic pain and the protection of important organs such as liver, brain, and lung in elderly patients during perioperative period. In the past 7 years, we have obtained 66 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, while have published more than 150 SCI papers in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Communications, Cell Research, Science Translational Medicine, Nature Communications, and other journals in the past 5 years, among which there are 21 papers published in Q1 area with an impact factor of more than 10 points. In 2020, our research project "Establishment of the Guarantee System and Key Technologies to Improve the Quality of Perioperative Treatment for Patients with Liver Diseases" won the first prize for Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Education, China.
