Orthopedic Traum of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was officially established in 2017. The department currently has one ward with over 30 beds. It treats over 65,000 patients with limb injuries annually, performs more than 3,500 surgeries per year, and admits over 3,600 inpatients annually. The department has a highly educated and specialized team of doctors. Among them, 22 doctors hold a Ph.D. degree, accounting for 72.7% of the team; 11 have senior professional titles, accounting for 50.00%.
The department has a high volume of business. The Traumatology and Orthopedics Emergency Room is open 24 hours a day to receive acute trauma patients. The Traumatology and Orthopedics outpatient clinic operates all day from Monday to Friday and has established specialized outpatient clinics for foot and ankle, shoulder, knee, hand surgery, and repair and reconstruction to better serve patients. With the rapid advancement of medical science and technology, the Traumatology and Orthopedics Department of Renji Hospital has developed rapidly and established a corresponding position in the industry, earning a good reputation among patients. It handles a large number of bone and joint injury patients annually, has accumulated rich clinical experience, and achieved fruitful research results. The treatment of severe limb fractures, fractures around the joints, pelvic acetabular fractures, old fractures and non-unions, pathological fractures, osteoporotic fractures, sports injuries, hand injuries, and other diseases has reached an advanced level in the country. With the popularization of arthroscopic technology in traumatology and orthopedics, the department has not only increased the proportion of minimally invasive surgical treatment for fractures around the joints but also elevated the treatment of complications after trauma around the joints (such as post-traumatic joint instability) to a new level.
The department has strong technical advantages in trauma first aid, various orthopedic critical illnesses, and severe complications. It actively applies cutting-edge modern technology and has conducted minimally invasive surgeries for pelvic acetabular fractures with the assistance of a robot pelvic reduction frame and robot-assisted cannulated screw technology, precise osteotomy treatment for fracture deformities under the guidance of 3D printed bone cutting guide plates, fracture reduction and fixation technology assisted by arthroscopy, minimally invasive internal fixation surgery, trauma repair and reconstruction, and other procedures. These new technologies have been widely promoted and applied in dozens of hospitals nationwide.
The department has made achievements in more than ten basic and clinical research projects related to biomedical coating material preparation, design and improvement of orthopedic implants, and improvement of surgical approaches for elbow joint surgery, which have been widely popularized and used in clinical practice. In the past three years, it has received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for two projects, undertaken multiple national and municipal research projects, published 12 SCI papers with a total impact factor of 42.972, including 5 papers with an impact factor exceeding 5, with the highest single paper impact factor reaching 8.2. It has been granted two utility model patents, has two master's supervisors, one national continuing education project, and one training course, and has sent three people to foreign hospitals or universities for further study. The academic conferences hosted or organized by the department include: Advanced Training Course on Diagnosis and Treatment of Periarticular Fractures of the Knee, Renji Traumatology Summit Forum and Advanced Course on Complex Periarticular Fractures, Seminar on New Technologies for Distal Radius Fractures, and Renji Hospital Ankle Forum.
