Deepen cooperation between sister hospitals to select the first batch of students for Shanghai - Ottawa Joint Medical School
April 25, Executive Vice President of University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, Professor Paul Bragg, led delegation of experts from University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and the Ottawa Hospital to give a week-long visit and exchange to our hospital. The delegation was divided into two groups, the management group and the student selection group. They aimed at deepening cooperation with our hospital in the fields of medical, research, teaching and nursing. They also selected the first batch of students for Shanghai - Ottawa Joint Medical School.
Vice President of our hospital, Daxiang Wen and Huili Dai, Executive Vice President of Shanghai - Ottawa Joint Medical School Li Shao, and the relevant functional departments respectively performed in-depth exchanges and reached a consensus with the delegation of the management group on implementation of specific embodiments in cooperation. First, in terms of basic and clinical research, beginning from the research and application of stem cells in the field of cardiovascular diseases as well as clinical research of gastrointestinal cancers, joint application of projects, exchange of researchers and joint training of graduate will all be further tried. Second, in case of personnel training, starting from the clinical and nursing management training, combined with short-term overseas project of directors and short-term training programs of nursing managers in our hospital, management training program tailored to our hospital will be realized together with the University of Ottawa Telfer School of Management. Third, in the nursing aspect, the two sides will focus on clinical practice, such as quality of nursing care and safety control, oncology, pain management as well as ambulatory surgical care. They will also develop cooperation in management and operation of the nursing simulation training center and evidence-based nursing research, and etc.. Meantime, Professor Deborah Bournes will be invited to attend and make a keynote speech on the International Nursing Care Forum organized by department of nursing in November. Fourth, in the field of clinical teaching, the two sides will fully support and continuously promote all the related works in Shanghai - Ottawa Joint Medical School, including dual degree, LCME / CACMS certification, simulation training center management and staff training as well as student internship abroad. The management group also visited and communicated with a part of clinical departments in our hospital during their visit. They had a detailed communication on preparation for rotation internship of students in Ottawa - Shanghai Joint Medical School. They also listened to students and residents for their recommendations on how to improve the quality of teaching.
At the same time, the student selection group of the delegation launched the first job interview of students in educational building of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The first students of Shanghai - Ottawa Joint Medical School are required to attend the selection interview organized by the Joint Medical School after completion of the premed courses in the first year. The enrolled students are expected to apply for MD degree from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine after the successful completion of the course in the following four years. According to the admission interview request of University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, members of the interview committee must consist of clinicians, community health services and senior medical students. This time, the Joint Medical School invited four experts from University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine with years of interview experience as the main interviewers. Two fourth-grade students of five-year English class were also selected as student interviewers to participate in the interview. The interview was divided into two groups at the same time. It lasted for 4 and half days. A total of 32 candidate students participated in the interview, and each student was given 40 minutes of interview time. The interviewer examined all aspects of the candidate students' abilities by chat, and ultimately gave comprehensive interview results. During the easy yet rigorous interview process, the interviewer gave the students full opportunity for self-expression. In order to ensure the fairness of the interview, each student signed a confidentiality agreement to ensure confidentiality of the content of the interview. Results of the interview will be announced by the committee after signing by the presidents of both sides of Sino-Canadian medical schools.
The delegation of experts from University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and the Ottawa Hospital came together with seven EMBA trainees and their instructors from University of Ottawa Telfer School of Management. Telfer School of Management enjoys high reputation in Canada, and all participants of EMBA class are Canadian senior managers like the presidents of different local industries. The main purpose of the visit of these EMBA trainees is to perform a week-long field research on the construction background, operational aspects as well as development planning for the International Family Doctor Outpatient in our hospital. The results of the research will provide reference assistance for the operation and development planning of the International Family Doctor Outpatient in our hospital in the fields of markets and etc..
