The Department of Bone and Joint Surgery of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a nationally renowned center specializing in bone and joint diseases. Integrating the disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and research, it is a comprehensive orthopedic disease treatment center. The department has four subspecialties: Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine, Spine Surgery, and Orthopaedic Trauma. Renowned joint surgery expert, Professor Wang You, who was also the principal scientist of China National Key R&D Program during the 13th Five-year Plan Period, and renowned joint surgery expert, Professor Wang Weili, have both served as the founding directors of the department.

Currently, the academic leader of the department is Prof. Yue Bing, Vice-President of Renji Hospital, a renowned expert in joint surgery in China, the winner of National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar, and the director of the Research Center for Musculoskeletal Diseases and Innovative Medical Devices of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The director of the department is Professor Qu Xinhua, an expert in joint surgery, the winner of National Natural Science Funds for Excellent Young Scholar and youth principal scientist of China National Key R&D Program during the 14th Five-year Plan Period.

The department has reached international technique standards of hip and knee replacements, arthroscopy, minimally invasive spinal disease treatments, and the management of complex orthopedic trauma. The department has three principal scientists of the National Key R&D Program, one National Distinguished Young Scholar, one National Excellent Young Scholar, four PhD supervisors and four MSc supervisors, 18 chief and associate chief physicians and serves as a degree-granting site for master’s and doctoral degrees at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In recent years, department members have led over 40 national and municipal research projects, including the National Key R&D Program, Subtopic of China's National High Technology Research and Development Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Projects of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and Major Projects of Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, with total research funding exceeding 100 million RMB. The department has made remarkable achievements in the field of basic and clinical research on bone and joint diseases, publishing over 200 papers in the international and national academic journals, including more than 150 SCI-indexed papers. Members have authored over 30 orthopedic textbooks and obtained over 60 patents. The members of the department have received numerous scientific awards, including the Second Prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award, Shanghai Science and Technology Advancement Award, Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, and the Second Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology.

Department members have held key positions in several prestigious medical and scientific associations, including: Executive Committee and National Committee Member of Chinese Society of Sports Medicine, National Committee Member of Chinese Sports Medical Doctor Association, National Committee Member of Joint Surgery Society of Chinese Orthopedic Association, National Committee Member of Arthroscopy Society of Chinese Orthopedic Association, Vice chairman of Chinese Knee Society, Vice Chairman of the China Division of the International Cartilage Repair Society, Standing Committee Member of the Medical Metals Branch of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, Chairman of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medical Engineering Society, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Sports Medical Doctor Association.
