Department of Hematology of Renji Hospital was established in 1963. It is one of the earliest hematology specialties established in China. 

The department, composed of 4 branches in different campuses located in Pudong New District, Huangpu CBD Area, Pujiang Town of Shanghai and Hangzhou Bay of Zhejiang Province, owns wards with about 100 beds, four air flow laminar units，one research lab and one hematology diagnosis lab. Currently, the department has over 3,000 annual inpatients and 30,000 annual out-patients. There are 26 doctors in the department. The doctors are divided into four sub-groups: multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma and hematology laboratory diagnosis. A lot of contributions have been done for the diagnosis and treatment of hematological diseases since its establishment. In the recent years, under the leadership of Professor Hou Jian, plenty of clinical and basic work about precision medicine, stem cell transplantation and clinical trials about novel drugs and technology have been carried out. The clinicians have gained much experience and achievements in the standardized and individualized treatment of MM. In the recent years, these research findings have brought several awards, including Chinese Medical Science and Technology Prize, Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Shanghai Public Health Bureau and Shanghai Achievements of Science and Technology.
