Ms. Wei, 29, (a pseudonym) had undergone two previous brain tumor resections. Unfortunately, during her pregnancy, she experienced a recurrence of a brain vascular tumor. At this critical moment, the question was whether to prioritize the mother’s life or the baby’s. Should they address the intracranial issue first or proceed with a cesarean section? At Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, a team of experts from multiple disciplines, including neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology, critical care medicine, radiology, and blood transfusion, quickly assembled. Their strategy: deliver the baby first, then perform brain surgery. After three multi-disciplinary team (MDT) consultations, an 8-hour surgery, and a dramatic 20-day ordeal, both mother and baby were discharged safely.
